40. Mirror City Shipping Ltd

Mirror’s Edge is the kind of game this industry needs to keep making.  I still don’t know how it’s going to pan out as an entire experience (I’ve only played the demo), but even if the game doesn’t turn out, the ideals that it is striving for are important.  I want it to succeed, I just don’t think it’s going to be 100% this time out.  Mirror’s Edge 2, on the other hand, is the game we should probably be the most excited for.

So how was your weekend?  Mine was filled with a love for Gears that I did not expect.  You know, I honestly wasn’t that excited for Gears of War 2.  I mostly avoided media coverage of it because I figured I already knew what to expect. I was wrong.

Gears 2 has completely blown my expectations out of the water.  This game is good.  Like, really good.  Maranda and I are slowly working our way through the game on hardcore and enjoying every minute of it (well, almost every minute of it… some parts are really hard in split screen. I’m eagerly anticipating another copy to arrive).  The horde mode has also impressed me.  We connected with Maranda’s parents Saturday night and played up to round 16. Sixteen! With her parents!! Cliff was looking to make the game accessible and guess what… he did!

NXE Thoughts
I’ve had a solid opportunity to play with the NXE now and I’ve got to admit that I really like it.  My favourite feature so far is the HDD copying.  Who knew that box could run so quiet?!  Avatars have also turned out a lot better than I had expected.  I’ve been watching the amount of free clothes expand significantly over the last week and have come up with several interesting styles.  I know they’re copying Nintendo’s Miis but honestly I don’t really care.  Miis were horribly realized.  Here’s hoping Microsoft makes better use of them.

SPILL! I want to know your thoughts on Gears 2.  NO SPOILERS I’M NOT FINISHED YET!!

Hey Sinnix,
I’m enjoying GoW2 as well. It’s the first game in a LONG time that is bringing out ALL my XBLive friends to play. Even GTA IV didn’t have this kind of impact.

I find the online play to be a lot more fun than the original game, co-op, horde and vs.

The campaign, what a concept, has a STORY…! It makes it so much more enjoyable. Just had a great moment near the end (no spoiler) where Cole goes off on a rant. COLE TRAIN! :)

Like one of the commenters on my site said: “They didn’t reinvent the wheel or anything, but they did make the wheel 10 times bigger, cover it with metal spikes, and stick it on a 2000hp monster truck with flames shooting out the back.”

The Queen is a lie!

Honestly though, I think Switch’s random commenter has it right. This is GoW plus OMG MORE EXPLOSIONS!! The story is better than the first, but is that really saying much? It’s all over the place and pumped full of every sci-fi cliche ever used. The story actually pulled me out of the game on more than one occasion.

Taken for face value, this is an action packed FPS that is wicked at incorporating more than 1 player. The action scenes were incredible and kept me very entertained. As far as story, well, I guess Epic can try again with GoW 3?

PS – Great Mirror’s Edge comic today!

@Blackfish
Yeah, I really am enjoying the story a lot more this time out. I’ve feel for every WTF moment saying to myself, “I can’t believe they did that!!”

@Mister
Switch That is a fantastic summary!

@DarthAlbert
Wow, really? So far I’m really digging the story! The co-op has definitely sold me. It really is the gold standard.

@Sinnix I’ve only ever played co-op. Don’t get me wrong, I love the game for what it is: a thrilling shooter. I like it slightly less for what it is not: a brilliantly woven story. Tycho @ Penny Arcade puts it more eloquently than I ever could: http://www.penny-arcade.com/2008/11/10/realness-gradient/

Great comic on Mirror’s Edge. And I just have to say that I LOVE your WordPress theme. I assume you did it all yourself, Mr graphic/design guru? :)

Nov 12

@Blackfish Thanks! Yup, i made this one from scratch. I’m already starting to get a little bored with it though. :P This is the seventh theme I’ve made for the blog, although I haven’t actually used (or finished) all seven.
