Being gamers, Maranda and I have spent an awful lot of time lately talking about which games are on the must-buy list this holiday season. Our lists differ a little, but I thought I’d take a moment to talk about my A and B tier games and why they’re on their particular list. Let’s start with the “A” list (games that I consider to be “must buy” on release):
- Fable 2
- Fallout 3
- Gears of War 2
Fable 2 wins top spot as my most anticipated game this year. A lot of people call me crazy, but I really did love the first game. I hadn’t heard any of the hype associated with this game except for that it was supposed to be really good and to this day it remains the only RPG that I’ve played through more than twice. If Peter Moleneux and his team say this one is better than I’m inclined to believe them. And, luckily, I’ve already had some playtime with this one last August at X08. I enjoyed what I played and October 21st can’t get here soon enough!
Speaking of RPGs, I really did try to get through Oblivion more than twice. Hell, even more than once would have been a significant accomplishment. Oh, don’t get me wrong… I tried to get through it again several times after I had completed the game but Tamriel is just so damn big that I never got very far! Bethesda’s follow up game has been described to me as Oblivion with guns and, let me tell you, that sounds freaking amazing.
For me, Gears of War 2 really represents the phenomenal season closer. Maranda and I played through the first game split-screen and had a fantastic time. You can tell that Cliff and the crowd over at Epic really knew what they were doing when they put that one together. Everything just makes sense. The next game is supposed to have a better story (which is good because I had to watch the ending of the last game twice before I could understand what happened), and better graphics (I’ve seen them in person, they’re pretty slick but you really have to look for the changes).
Hit the jump for more…

So there are my top games for the year… but what about the others? The “B” list, or games that I’m going to probably end up buying eventually but not until the “A” list is finished, are as follows:
- Call of Duty 5
- End War
- Mirror’s Edge
- FarCry 2
I have a strong feeling that they’ll all be great, but each of them have a fatal flaw that get them pushed back a notch. COD5 is… sigh… World War 2. I can assure you that if was placed in the same time period as COD4 this would be up there on the A list.
End War is an amazing experience. I’ve had some good plays of the beta and WOW, am I ever impressed. Why is it on the B list? Because in order for Maranda and I to play together we need two copies of the game. Pocketbook says, “ouch”.
Mirror’s Edge looks like a fantastic game but one that I’m a little concerned about. I’m sure that it will be fun… in the beginning… but I’m concerned that it will quickly move beyond my skill near the end of the game.
Far Cry? It looks like an amazing experience… but without a significant hook. I want to play it… but I can’t tell you why? Sounds like a B lister to me.
I should also probably mention that this only covers the 360 games I’m thinking about for the season. PC games like Red Alert 3 and Left 4 Dead are high on the priority list but, well, this is an Xbox blog after all.
What’s on your A list this year?

RSS
Fable 2, Lips, Mirror’s Edge
I want to see how many babies I can make!! lol
That’s a great comic this week! I liek your art. If i could only pick three games they would be
- Guitar Hero World Tour
- Gears 2
- Left 4 Dead (which is also coming to xbox)
Wow, your list is really RPG heavy. I’m not really into games like Fallout (I didn’t like Oblivion AT ALL). My must buy games are pretty much anything i can shoot someone with… Gears, COD:WaW, Saint’s Row 2, Far Cry.
There are lots… too many probably. I’ll have to make up my mind eventually but I’m not ready to choose just yet!!
Also… I noticed the pagetitle on your website changed. Are you actually updating Monday’s now? Like… *every* monday? ^^

@Crater
Thanks for the compliment!
@Rick
This marks the second week of me updating Monday. I’m still trying to work out all the details, but yes… I’m planning update every week from here on out. I’ll be posting more details soon.
Awesome comic!
My “short” list:
GOW2
Fable 2 (maybe)
Left 4 Dead
MC:LA
NFS:UC
SBK 08
BK: N&B
And I think there are going to be more…lol
Adding that up…it comes to $430. sadface
After playing the demo (which is now on XBL Marketplace, btw) I am really excited for End War, which I didn’t really expect. It’s super fun, and I always like to have a shorter game to turn to on week nights. I am most excited about GOW2 and Fable 2, and I also want to pick up Lips. Fallout looks awesome, but I really don’t think I’m going to have time to get into it any time soon
I think Mirror’s Edge is going to be a game access game, as it doesn’t look like it has a lot of replay value… plus i’m pretty sure i’m going to suck at it.
Also on my must-have list for this season is the new red controller! LOVE it
I saw your Fable II comic on ‘Inside Xbox’ released on October 15. Ep. 36 – Another Day In Albion – Part 1.
Under the comic there is a red banner that says, “Exclusive Canadian Content Find More on Xbox.ca”
I have not found anything that appears to be exclusive content. I’m curious, what am I missing,..if anything?
Thanks.

Jade is our community rep, all of her content is exclusive to Canada. If you’ve got ideas for more I’m sure she’d love to hear from you: jade@microsoft.com
I am in the same boat as Goliath7. What is this exclusive content? I don’t see anything on xbox.ca. Help?
See my previous comment! Jade handles all of our exclusive content. Everything from monthly community game nights, exclusive interviews with devs, to exclusive contests and giveaways!
Watching the official Xbox Canada forum is also a great place to find cool stuff.
Her site doesn’t answer any questions. Where do I look for the exclusive Canadian content? I can’t find it. What was the exclusive content advertised underneath this comic in the message on XBL?
Everything under Jade’s page is exclusive. All of it. This link in particular is an entire page full of content only found on Xbox.ca
